Gemstone Series --- Chocolate Opal

In the early 1990′s, a new type of opal was found in Mezezo Ethiopia Africa. This new opal was called Ethiopian Chocolate opal because of the chocolate color found inside the nodule.

These opals are found at Yita Ridge, in the Menz Gishe District of Shewa Province, around 150 miles northeast of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
The opal field lies around 12 miles north of Mezezo and extends for several square kilometers along the northern side of the Yita Ridge.
This type of opal  is Volcanic in origin. The opals are found in a nodular form within a 3 meters thick continuous layer  of welded volcanic ash, similar to obsidian in character and just as tough to mine.

Gem quality Chocolate Ethiopian opals have a diverse play of colors, from Neon reds, oranges, green, blue, white, yellow and gold. The are even colors that are not present in Australian opals, such as turquoise and indigos.
Precious Ethiopian Chocolate Opal is widely sought after world wide. The color is brilliant and rivals any top grade precious opal in the world. Most have a high brightness level with hot neon multi-colors and multiple patterns exhibited.
These opals have become quite popular as they have striking pattern formations which make each opal so unique. With amazing patterns and fire play, Ethiopian Chocolate Opal is loved by many polishers, carvers and specimen collectors around the world.
